What was it like being diagnosed with osteosarcoma as a child?

Jennifer was only six years old when she received her osteosarcoma diagnosis – as a child, she could not fully grasp the severity of her condition. Her parents managed to maintain a sense of normality despite the difficult situation, giving her security and stability. Looking back, she recognizes how important that protected environment was for coping with her illness. Being a child also brought a certain advantage: she lived more in the moment and worried less about the future.

What role did support programs play during your treatment?

The various activities and support programs during treatment were the highlight of Jennifer's day. They gave her new energy and helped break through the exhausting hospital routine. The variety and the opportunity to simply be a child were enormously important. These experiences showed her how valuable such programs are for young patients going through treatment.

How important was sport on your path to recovery?

Sport became a form of therapy for Jennifer – it helped her feel strong and alive again. Through physical activity, she was able to gradually regain trust in her body and test her own limits anew. Sport also provided her with a community and a goal to work towards. This positive cycle of movement, achievements, and growing self-confidence became a central building block of her recovery.

How did physical activity help you rebuild strength, both physically and mentally?

Physical activity helps not only to rebuild physical strength – it also strengthens mental resilience and emotional well-being. Jennifer experienced that regular exercise helped her reduce stress and look more positively toward the future. Every small step of progress in training gave her the feeling of regaining control over her life. The connection between body and mind became a decisive factor on her path to recovery.

How did your illness influence your career choice to become a radiologist?

Her childhood cancer diagnosis motivated Jennifer to study medicine and specialize in radiology. She wanted to help other patients and switch sides – from patient to physician. Her personal experience gives her a deep understanding of her patients' situations. Today she can combine her medical expertise with genuine empathy, which she considers a great privilege.

How did you find your way to Paralympic rowing?

Despite the lasting physical limitations from her illness, Jennifer found her way back to an active, fulfilling life through sport. Paralympic rowing gave her the opportunity to compete at the highest athletic level and continually redefine her boundaries. Competitive sport taught her discipline, perseverance, and belief in her own abilities. Her story demonstrates that limitations do not have to be obstacles to achieving greatness.

What message would you like to share with others affected by cancer?

Jennifer's message is clear: you are so much more than your diagnosis – never lose faith in yourself. A cancer diagnosis does not define who you are or what you can achieve. She encourages others to seek support and hold on to their dreams. Every journey is different, but with courage and confidence, things are possible that you might never have imagined.
